The story of Seiko dates back as far as 1881 when Japanese entrepreneur Kintaro Hattori opening a watch shop is centre of Ginza, Tokyo. Not just selling but also repairing watches, this keen mind opened the first Seiko factory called 'Seikosha' just 11 years later. These were the first steps towards the Seiko brand which has become of the most innovative and recognisable watch brands worldwide.
Time really began for Seiko timepieces with the first pocket watch in 1895, a revolutionary invention which paved the way for Seiko's first wristwatch. The drive for the first wristwatch was on and in 1913 the Kintaro completed the next big step with the first Seiko wristwatch called the 'Laurel'. The next key move was 1924 with the creation of the first Seiko branded wristwatch, which created a new wave of revolution from the Seiko brand being the National Railway official pocket watch provider to the creation of the 'Diashock' a shock resistant device.
Revolution and evolution are key terms for Seiko, but the brand is a leader in principle branding within itself. This began in the Grand Seiko unveiling in 1960 a pinnacle in mechanical watch making and accuracy. Furthermore the first wristwatch was with a stopwatch from Seiko was released in 1964 tying to the Tokyo Olympics.
Perhaps the most inspirational moment came in 1965 with Seiko creating Japans first divers watch taking to the depth of 150 metres, which inspires the Seiko Prospex we see today. The automatic calibre 6139 was the next step in 1969 which offered a chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel. This was then preceded by the worlds first quartz watch, the Seiko Quartz Astron, a watch 100 time more accurate than any other, a true game changer across the world and rest is history.
Since we have seen revolutionary divers and dress watches which continue to inspire the the new range of Seiko timepieces we see today:
